Abstract
Advanced academic training is strongly centered on research, yet long-term professional success depends on how effectively individuals translate their expertise into real-world opportunities. This talk provides a practical, experience-driven perspective on how students and early-career researchers in Taiwan can maximize their academic journey by strategically positioning themselves for diverse career pathways beyond their core academic work. The session is structured around three key pillars. First, it will discuss research development and positioning, including how to build a clear research identity, plan publications strategically, and align technical work with impactful domains such as artificial intelligence, intelligent systems, and healthcare innovation. Second, it will explore how to identify and engage with opportunities in Taiwan beyond the laboratory, including industry collaborations, research institutes, internships, and government-supported programs, with practical insights into how these opportunities are typically accessed through networks and proactive engagement. Third, it will provide guidance on job searching in Taiwan, covering both academic and industry roles, expected skill sets, and strategies for positioning oneself competitively in an international environment. In addition, the talk will include personal insights from my research and career experience in Taiwan, highlighting lessons learned in navigating academic and industry pathways. Special emphasis will be placed on what students can actively do during their time in Taiwan beyond research, such as building technical portfolios, developing transferable skills, networking effectively, and engaging with key sectors. Overall, this session aims to equip participants with clear, actionable strategies to move beyond research, identify and pursue opportunities in Taiwan, and prepare for successful global careers.
