摘要

This talk is composed of two mini-talks. In the first half of the
talk, I will talk about how I use operating system support to make
trouble shooting misconfiguration easier. Troubleshooting
misconfiguration is a frustrating process. In this work, I use a
modified Linux, which supports checkpoint/rollback and speculative
execution, to allow users to explore many possible solutions for
a configuration problem. The evaluation showed that user
troubleshooting time is greatly improved with operating system
support for three real world applications. I will conclude the first
half by talking about some systems management work my research group
is conducting for cloud environment. For the second half, I will
switch gear to talk about Slingshot, a system that enables mobile
phones to opportunistically use machines nearby to offload
computation.
