Abstract

Citizen science and the practices of using low-cost sensor technologies to monitor urban environments can generate distinct forms of data that bring different perspectives to urban problems. Designing an approach that encourages inclusion, collaboration and reciprocation can be crucial part of a healthy citizen science activity. Also, prioritizing the accessibility of data to everyone is important to expedite data informed decision making. This presentation documents work from the Citizen Sense project and iSCAPE Project in the UK, which investigated how researchers and local communities undertook urban air quality sensing to make claims about urban environment and also discusses about using narrative as a mode of citizen science evaluation.

BIO

Dr. Sachit Mahajan is a Research Associate at the Department of Sociology, University of Cambridge, UK. His research interests focus on Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning and social computing in general. His current research addresses some important interfaces between technology, environment and citizen involvement. He is currently working on the Airkit proof of concept project as part of the Citizen Sense research group. The AirKit project is focused on Citizen Sense research to investigate the role of low-cost and digital monitoring technologies in facilitating and organizing new types of environmental engagement.
