Abstract
This presentation will explore the integration of multiple disciplines in advancing the field of music research, highlighting the synthesis of historical, technological, and artistic methodologies. We will begin with an examination of the “A Concert in a Vanished Church” project, which combines historical research, archaeological discoveries, and contemporary music technology to contextualize the auditory history of San Salvador City in Taiwan. This project, accepted by SIGGRAPH 2024, utilizes archaeoacoustics and live music performance to recreate and interpret historical soundscapes. Following this, we will discuss the project “There is Another Capital Beneath the Waves” which investigates Taiwan’s sugar industry during the Japanese colonial period. This project employs visual art and traditional puppetry to elucidate historical and modern connections between Taiwan and Japan, providing a comprehensive analysis of cultural and economic impacts. Lastly, we will explore the ongoing interdisciplinary VR exhibition that integrates contemporary art, underwater archaeology, and archaeoacoustics. This collaboration with Tsinghua University archaeologists leverages virtual reality to create interactive performances based on underwater archaeological sites around Taiwan, demonstrating innovative applications of spatial audio and VR in music. This presentation will underscore the significance of interdisciplinary approaches in music research, emphasizing their potential to foster new insights and methodologies in the field.
